• Astorath the Grim [1]

Astorath was probably the first Finecast model I purchased, and surprisingly he is a pretty good cast. No thin parts, miscastings, and probably only one or two tiny bubbles. At the time I attributed it to being a new model with newer molds - although I've since learned there was issues with a lot of the early batches and its best to check the batch number on the packet when purchasing!

But he's a very cool figure, lots of little details, and some really interesting and unusual armor - looks to have been inspired by Dracula's armor in the Gary Oldman movie. The muscles on the armor were dry brushed with Mechrite Red over a Chaos Black undercoat. Then he was washed with a light coat of Badab Black to shade and bring up the separations in the muscles. Then he was carefully dry brushed again with a light coat of Blood Red, and a final mix of Blood Red and Orange to shade the highlights.

The mask was built up using shades of Gray, until I reached a not-quite-white for the top coat of the mask, and then a final highlight of Skull White to bring out the shapes of the face.

The wings were painted with a mix of Charadon Granite and Black, so the wings are a not-quite-black color. Then the edges of the feathers were painted with Charadon Granite, and a highlight of Codex Gray was then painted along the edge. This was done for each individual feather, and some detailing along the tops of the wings.

I still have a little more detail work to finish including the axe head, the base, and scrawlings on the various parchments.

Astorath 220 points 6 5 4 4 3 5 3 10 2+
Wargear: Artificer armor, bolt pistol, The Executioner's Axe, frag and krak grenades, jump pack, rosarius
Special Rules: Descent of Angels, Independent Character, Liturgies of Blood, Honor of the Chapter, Shadow of the Primarch
The Executioner's AxeThe Executioner's Axe is a two-handed power weapon that strikes at Strength 6. Successful invulnerable saves taken against wounds caused by the Executioner's Axe must be re-rolled.
Shadow of the Primarch If Astorath is included in the army, all Blood Angels units (friend and foe!) that have the Red Thirst special rule will succumb to its effects on a roll of 3 or less, rather than a roll of 1.
Liturgies of Blood On a player turn in which he assaults, Astorath and all members of any squad he has joined can reroll failed rolls to hit. Death Company models can also re-roll failed rolls to wound (their rage makes them particularly susceptible to Astorath's fiery oratory).
