• Space Marine Captain

Bought my ticket for Golden Demon 2008 yesterday. This is the first year I've had a go, so I hope I don't get laughed off the competition. I got the GD miniature for this year, the Space Marine Captain. He's a pretty cool sculpt, striking with a large warhammer out in front of him.

I started by cleaning up the mold lines on the figure, and giving all the parts a good wash with liquid soap to remove the mold release. Because I'm not using a standard slotta base, I cut the tab on the bottom of the figure so I ended up with a piece of tab under each foot. I could'nt just remove the tab because the figure is standing on the tips of his boots with the heels off the ground. I then drilled a couple of holes on a Back2Base-IX industrial base, and glued the tabs into the holes. When the super glue was dry, I undercoated all the pieces in Chaos Black. The captain's armor was painted in my standard Blood Angels color scheme: Mechrite Red, Blood Red, wash of Magenta Ink, then wash of Baal Red. Looks great already! The highlight on the armor plates was picked out in Blazing Orange. The chest eagle was painted with Tin Bitz, then Shining Gold, and a wash of Chestnut Ink. Finally a highlight of Burnished Gold. I also tried a mix of Burnished Gold and Mithril Silver around the very edges of the eagle to really pop it. The hammer head was painted in Shadow Gray, with a dry brush of Fortress Gray, and a final dry brush of Skull White. The hammer head should be an off-white color with shading from the grays showing at the edges of the components. A final edging of Skull White was used as a highlight. The emblems; eagles etc were finished in Gold like the chest eagle. The various gems on the hammer were painted in Gore Red, then Blood Red, and given a little shine point at the top with a drop of Skull White, and a slightly large curve at the bottom. Instead of the usual black trim around the shoulder pads, I've painted them in Shining Gold and Burnished Gold to reflect his Captain status. His bolt pistol was painted in Boltgun Metal, then washed with Badab Black, and given some highlighting with Chainmail. The holster and straps were painted with Scorched Brown, then Graveyard Earth, and a highlight of Kommando Khaki. The buckles were painted with Boltgun Metal, then highlighted with Chainmail. A wash of Devlan Mud helped blend the browns together and provide some additional shading. The tabard was painted in Scorched Brown, then Bestial Brown, and Vomit Brown highlights. It was washed with a mix of Devlan Mud and Baal Red to tint it a red/brown color.

I had some issues with the figure's pose over-balancing the figure - it would tend to tip over because he's leaning forward and up on his toes. I probably should have set him at the edge of the base so he's leaning forward over the bulk of the base.
